Email Fraud Advisory
-- Updated March 2006
Fraud Name: MBNA Net Access Phishing Email
Description: Email claims to be from MBNA America Bank. Email recipients have been informed that recent changes within their MBNA Net Access account may be due to unauthorized access by a third party. The sender of the email requests that recipients login into their MBNA Net Access account via a link within the fraudulent email to update/review their account information. When a user clicks on the link contained within the email they are redirected to a site that is not owned or operated by MBNA.
In an attempt to add legitimacy to this scam, the email contains a fake GeoTrust site seal. This site seal is NOT REAL and has not been issued by GeoTrust.
Please be advised that GeoTrust sells identity verification products and trust services for e-business. Our Web security services include SSL server certificates which are issued only after business and web site ownership are verified through a comprehensive authentication process. This business and/or individual was never issued a GeoTrust SSL certificate and therefore has NOT been through our business authentication process.
Recommended Action: We would advise that you do not use the link contained within this email to update account information. Recipients of this email should contact MBNA directly via their normal means of communication.
GeoTrust Action: GeoTrust has been contacted by individuals who have received similar emails, and we have aided in shutting down the fraudulent site. In addition, the site has been added to the TrustWatch list of disreputable sites (see the TrustWatch Warning Alert).
